YANKEE STORY: YANKEES vs DODGERS SERIES
by: Victor Suarez
The New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 on Sunday to take the series at Dodger Stadium. The Yankees were without Aaron Judge, who injured his right foot on Saturday, but they used a combination of pitching and timely hitting to get the win.
Domingo German started for the Yankees and pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out five and walked one. Clay Holmes pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win, and Wandy Peralta pitched the ninth for his fourth save.
The Yankees got on the board in the seventh inning when Kyle Higashioka hit a grounder to second base with a runner on third. The runner broke for home and the throw was late, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
The Dodgers tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by J.D. Martinez.
The Yankees took the lead for good in the eighth inning. With a runner on third and one out, Oswaldo Cabrera hit a grounder to third base. The third baseman made the play, but the throw to first was wild, allowing the runner to score and giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
Anthony Volpe added an insurance run in the ninth inning with a two-run home run.
The Yankees finished the West Coast trip with a 4-2 record. They will return home on Monday to face the Detroit Tigers.
Here are some other notable things from the game:
- Gleyber Torres went 0-for-4 for the second day in a row. He had been batting .327 during a 12-game hitting streak that matched a career high.
- DJ LeMahieu went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. His average dropped to .239.
- The Yankees bullpen pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Yankees will be hoping to get Judge back in the lineup soon. He is one of the best players in baseball and his absence was felt on Sunday. The Yankees will also be without Nestor Cortes for the next two starts. He is one of their top pitchers and his injury is a blow.
Despite the injuries, the Yankees were able to get the win on Sunday. They are a deep team and they have shown that they can win even when they are not at full strength.
