Roger Maris stood at the plate, his heart pounding in his chest. He had been waiting for this moment his whole life. He took a deep breath and swung the bat. The ball soared into the air, and the crowd went wild. Maris had just hit his 61st home run of the season, breaking Babe Ruth’s single-season record.
The Yankees went on to win the game, and Maris was named the American League Most Valuable Player. He was a hero to fans everywhere. But he was also a target for hate mail and death threats. Some people didn’t think he deserved to break Ruth’s record.
Maris never let the controversy get to him. He just kept playing his game. And in the end, he proved that he was one of the greatest baseball players of all time.
